Railroads have always served as the lifelines of a community and the Southern Pacific Railroad is no exception. From its humble beginnings in the 1870s till its takeover by the Union Pacific Railroad in the late 1980s, The Southern Pacific, or "SP", as it is fondly remembered, played a pivotal role on the development of the western States, including, Washington, Oregon, California and Nevada. Ferrying across loads of timber, farm products and mineral ore out to the east and bringing back dairy products and other essentials to the west, the railroad served both as a means of transport and livelihood to thousands.
It was by no means an easy task to construct and run this huge network of rails. The rugged mountainous terrain to the west and the dry scorching desert to the east made construction and maintenance of railway lines difficult and immensely challenging. Blinding snowstorms in winter and the year-round blistering heat and sandstorms in the desert regions posed seemingly insurmountable barriers. Besides, there were daily logistics and other operational tasks to be performed.
The SP met and overcame all these challenges and chugged on, expanding rapidly by laying new lines and acquiring others from existing railroad companies.
This set of DVDs presents a fabulous insight into the detailed working of the SP. It also provides a thrilling and picturesque travelogue of the western states that the SP passes through. |
